With an emphasis on dramatic narrative filmmaking, and twin streams in acting and production, the Motion Picture Arts (MPA) program prepares students to tell their stories to the world through motion pictures, the most powerful medium of our time.

The Bachelor of Applied Motion Picture Arts enables students who have completed two years of post-secondary theatre, broadcasting, or related studies to expand and apply their primary training to the rapidly growing motion picture, television and multimedia industries.  Equivalent training or professional experience will also be considered for acceptance.  The MPA program starts at the 3rd year, with parallel streams in Acting and Production offering intensive theory and hands-on instruction in acting, producing, directing, screenwriting, audition techniques, business and career path, cinematography, sound, digital editing, and production management. Students also benefit from an extensive guest speaker series with practical workshops conducted by industry experts and field trips to major production facilities and industry events. The 3rd year culminates in an Advanced Certificate in Motion Picture Arts, after which students may move on to the mentored 4th year practicum, either working directly in the industry or using the College’s equipment and facilities to produce a substantial motion picture, or a combination of both. Graduates of the 4th year receive the Bachelor of Applied Motion Picture Arts degree.

Unique to Canadian film schools, the MPA program is an integrated part of the College’s Theatre Studies Department, sharing access to full costuming, set construction, props, special effects and lighting and sound facilities. Students have access to the Arts Centre complex, which includes a 576-seat proscenium theatre with a seven story fl y tower, a 2500 square-foot studio theatre/ sound stage, digital recording and mixing studio, fully equipped shops, and design and rehearsal facilities. The MPA program has its own dedicated sound stage with green screen, professional 24p widescreen camera packages, ARRI lighting, extensive grip equipment including dolly, track and camera jib, and dedicated private Final Cut ProHD editing suites.

Our award-winning faculty and staff have extensive experience in feature films, television series, commercials, movies of the week, music videos and independent productions, as well as production credits in educational and professional theatres across Canada. Graduates of the MPA program can be found in major production centres throughout North America and beyond and are taking leadership roles in the continuing growth of the motion picture industry in Canada.

The MPA program has received tremendous support from industry leaders, including the Alberta Film Commission, the Alberta Motion Picture Industries Association, the National Film Board of Canada, Global Television Network, CBC, ACTRA, IATSE, joe:Media Group, Minds Eye Pictures, Image Works Alberta Inc., Landmark Cinemas, Crescent Entertainment Ltd., White Iron Inc., Catalyst Distribution Inc. and many others.

As Canadians consume ever more electronic information and entertainment, the
electronic and film media industries are expanding to meet their needs. Our
graduates find employment in both the creative and operational areas of media
production.

The working environment of graduates depends upon the option studied, and the
opportunities available upon graduation. An increasing number of CTSR
graduates work on a contract or freelance basis. Our students find employment
primarily in the western provinces, although many have found success in other
areas of Canada and abroad.
